summary

This monograph, written on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, follows the stages of the "communist experiment” at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, in a broader historical context. The fates of generations of students and professors are used to demonstrate the turbulent environment, which was marked by alternating periods of dependence on the communist ideology with those in which many were able to achieve self-reflection and independent thinking, which required civic courage. It indicates that among both the students and professors at the faculty, there were those who would not stand the test of democratic environment as well as erudite experts, exposed to ideological pressure and political screening, or worse, monitoring by the State Police. The book pays special attention to the events of 1989, the conditions and timeline of the political revolution, attempting to capture the heritage of the past in the faculty’s future development.
